The Volunteer
This day, like many days
filled itself with those things
which are seldom noticed
except when left undone
Beds were made
Bills paid
Meals prepared
Dishwasher filled
Laundry washed, dried, folded, put away
Toilets cleaned
Floor vacuumed
Rugs shaken
Garbage hauled to the curb
Mail opened and dealt with
And tomorrow
I am scheduled to volunteer
since the woman on the phone today
thought it would be nice for me
to have something to do

Isn’t this the ultimate truth! I tell my kids (and hubby) I’m not an unpaid personal servant.
Apparently, they missed that memo.
A new acronym! UPS.
I think that acronym has already been taken, Robin.
Aren’t you the clever one! Now that we have a name for it – maybe someone can come up with a “cure”
Ah, what would life be for them without us, Sue? I’d never want that for them.
Yes, but don’t you think that it would be nice at least once a year, to experience all that ignoring of dirty socks and laundry and dishes and cooking – and know that it’ll all still get done?
You need to find out from Carolyn (below) where to acquire those housework fairies. Yes, it would be nice.
That would be a good name for a cleaning company I think. Instead of hiring a “handiman” you can hire the housework fairies. I scoped out Carolyn’s site this morning. Very sweet site.
So hilariously true! I love the truth in that first line. No one knows what Mom does until she doesn’t do it
Yes, this is for moms and homemakers everywhere. We all need to be appreciated now and then.
delightful poem, Lori. With very strong and unexpected ending lines. Very well done.
groetjes , Francina
Thank you for stopping by, Francina. So good to have you here. Thank you for your kind comments. You write beautiful poetry.
Thanks for the belly laugh, Lori, you made my day! Now to do something unnoticeable…
Yep, me too. Thanks, Robin.
such a wonderful piece! it really made me smile … thank you & i can relate : – )
Thank you, Caroline.
Had my four grandchildren for the weekend and I can definitly relate!
I’ll bet you’re in recovery and rest mode now!
Wonderful. So fun…and true.
Thank you, Susan. I’m grounded today with some sort of bug, but was able to sit at the computer for a couple of hours and I got one load folded. Whoopee. It’s been a timely reminder to be thankful for good health when I have it.
I can relate to this! Well put.
Thank you!
Haha, Lori; it seems a woman’s work is never done… Well, mine gets done; sometimes in the wee small hours of the morning, or late in the evening when ‘the day is done’… well, for some..!
Happy volunteering, and remind those housework fairies to be smart and punctual about their work..!
Oh Carolyn, Where can I get one of those housework fairies? It would be wonderful to have one of those.
Giggling about your choice for title. This hits home, Lori.
Glad you liked the title, Jane.
Your comment means a lot to me.
Lol! This poem is funny! Thanks Lori!
Resa, So good to hear from you. I’ll bet you’ve been on a job! I’m heading over to your blog right now to check it out.
Yes, I was on a job!
It was a multi-cam, taped in front of a live audience sit-com Pilot! Hopefully it will get picked up! I only get this week off then I’m going onto an MOW.
I hope it gets picked up, too. Can’t wait to hear more. Hope it’s good news for you.
MOW=Movie of the Week, I presume? Terrific, Resa.
Thanks Lori! Yes MOW = Movie of the Week.
Always ask the busiest person!
Well I’m just glad to know (not) that there is someone out there making sure volunteer just so that you don’t get bored (between the chores)
On a serious note, it did make me stop to think about what some people for us that we may take for granted.
I like the twist you put on it with your last sentence. Well said, Jacquie.
Ha! This is a good one Lori and so so so true! Definitely made me LOL!
I’m glad it brought a smile to a corner of Virginia. Thanks, Dor!
So clever!
Thanks, Lisa.
Seems like a pretty lazy day to me. What about that roof leak in the garage, the torn screen on the back porch door ? Never thought of that far too long oil change needed and returning those blouses to Pennys, did you? And there are crumbs in the bottom of the toaster and you have not balanced your check book in six weeks. Sounds like a pretty lazy day to me.
You’re right Carl, and it’s been longer than six weeks for my checkbook I’m afraid to say.
